Calf tears

Calf tears

The calf is on the back of your lower leg and is made up of a number of muscles with similar but slightly differing functions. Calf tears are normally caused by one event, such as sprinting, but can equally build up gradually over time. They tend to recover well with treatment (the sooner the better!) and good rehabilitation.

As with all injuries, the initial aim of treatment is to minimise pain. Massage, mobilisations and manipulations are used in order to restore full movement, and specific rehabilitation exercises are used to regain strength in the affected muscle. Biomechanics [the mechanical relationship between the bones, muscles and joints] are also addressed to identify any factors that may have predisposed the injury.
