Cervical nerve root impingement / compression

Cervical nerve root impingement / compression

Cervical nerve root impingement (or compression) occurs when one or more nerve roots exiting the cervical spine (neck) become compressed or irritated. This pressure disrupts normal nerve function, causing pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness that may radiate into the shoulder, arm, or hand.

Symptoms

  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Sharp or burning pain radiating to the shoulder, arm, or fingers
  • Numbness or tingling in the arm or hand
  • Muscle weakness in the shoulder, arm, or grip
  • Reduced neck movement
  • Pain that worsens with coughing, sneezing, or certain neck movements

Recovery

Most people improve with conservative treatment within 6–12 weeks. Persistent or severe nerve compression may require specialist evaluation and, in some cases, surgery.
