Dupuytren’s Contracture

Dupuytren’s Contracture

Dupuytren’s Contracture is a progressive condition that affects the connective tissue beneath the skin of the palm and fingers, causing it to thicken and tighten over time. This leads to the formation of firm cords that gradually pull one or more fingers, most commonly the ring and little fingers, into a bent position, making it difficult to fully straighten them. Although the condition is usually painless, it can significantly affect hand function and make everyday activities such as shaking hands, gripping objects, wearing gloves, or placing the hand flat on a surface more challenging.

The exact cause is not fully understood, but it is more common in older adults and may be associated with genetic factors, diabetes, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption. In the early stages, conservative management and physiotherapy may help maintain hand mobility and function, while more advanced cases may require injections or surgery to release the tightened tissue. Following treatment, a structured rehabilitation programme is essential to restore finger movement, improve flexibility, strengthen the hand, reduce stiffness, and maximise functional recovery, enabling patients to return comfortably to their daily activities and improve their overall quality of life.
