Lumbar foraminal stenosis

Lumbar foraminal stenosis

Lumbar Foraminal Stenosis is a condition in which the openings (foramina) through which the spinal nerves exit the lower spine become narrowed, placing pressure on the nerve roots. This narrowing is commonly caused by age-related degeneration, disc bulges, bone spurs, arthritis, or thickening of the surrounding ligaments. As the nerves become compressed, individuals may experience lower back pain that radiates into the buttocks, thighs, legs, or feet, along with numbness, tingling, muscle weakness, or burning sensations. Symptoms often worsen with prolonged standing, walking, or certain spinal movements and may interfere with daily activities, work, and recreational pursuits.

Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are essential to relieve nerve compression and prevent long-term complications. Physiotherapy plays an important role in managing lumbar foraminal stenosis by reducing pain, improving spinal mobility, strengthening the core and lower limb muscles, enhancing flexibility, and correcting posture and movement patterns. Treatment may include manual therapy, stretching, strengthening exercises, nerve mobilisation techniques, spinal stabilisation exercises, and education on proper body mechanics. A personalised rehabilitation programme helps improve function, increase walking tolerance, reduce symptoms, and enable patients to return safely to their normal daily activities with greater comfort and confidence.
