Lumbar nerve root impingement / compression

Lumbar Nerve Root Impingement (Compression) is a condition in which one or more nerves in the lower spine become compressed or irritated, often due to a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, bone spurs, or age-related degeneration. This pressure on the nerve can cause lower back pain that radiates into the buttock, thigh, calf, or foot, commonly known as sciatica. Depending on the affected nerve, symptoms may include numbness, tingling, muscle weakness, burning pain, or reduced sensation in the leg or foot. Everyday activities such as walking, standing, bending, lifting, or sitting for prolonged periods may become painful and difficult. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are important to relieve nerve irritation, restore normal movement, and prevent long-term nerve damage.

Physiotherapy plays a vital role in reducing pain, improving spinal mobility, strengthening the core and lower limb muscles, enhancing flexibility, and correcting posture and movement patterns that contribute to nerve compression. Treatment may include manual therapy, nerve gliding exercises, therapeutic exercises, spinal stabilisation, and education on proper body mechanics. A personalised rehabilitation programme helps restore function, improve mobility, reduce the risk of recurrence, and enable patients to return safely to work, sports, and everyday activities with greater comfort and confidence.
