Mallet finger

Mallet finger

Mallet Finger is a common finger injury that occurs when the tendon responsible for straightening the tip of the finger is damaged or torn, usually as a result of a direct impact to the fingertip. In some cases, a small piece of bone may also be pulled away with the tendon. This injury causes the fingertip to droop and makes it difficult or impossible to fully straighten the end joint of the finger. Mallet finger commonly occurs during sports such as basketball, cricket, or football, but it can also result from everyday accidents. Symptoms include pain, swelling, tenderness, bruising, and loss of active finger extension.

Early diagnosis and treatment are important to ensure proper healing and prevent permanent deformity. Most cases can be successfully managed with continuous splinting, while more severe injuries involving fractures or joint instability may require surgery. Physiotherapy plays an important role in the rehabilitation process by restoring finger mobility, improving strength and flexibility, reducing stiffness, and helping patients regain normal hand function. A personalised rehabilitation programme supports a safe return to work, sports, and daily activities while minimising the risk of long-term complications
