Pelvic floor dysfunction in men

Pelvic floor dysfunction in men

Pelvic Floor Dysfunction in Men (Post-Prostatectomy Incontinence, Pelvic Pain) condition in which the pelvic floor muscles become weak, overactive, or fail to function properly, leading to problems such as urinary incontinence, pelvic pain, bowel dysfunction, or sexual dysfunction. It commonly occurs following prostate surgery (prostatectomy), pelvic trauma, prolonged straining, or certain neurological conditions. Men may experience urine leakage during coughing, sneezing, lifting, or exercise, frequent or urgent urination, discomfort in the pelvic region, or difficulty controlling bladder function. These symptoms can significantly affect confidence, daily activities, work, exercise, and overall quality of life

Early assessment and appropriate treatment are important to promote recovery and restore normal pelvic floor function. Physiotherapy plays a key role in managing pelvic floor dysfunction through targeted pelvic floor muscle training, core stability exercises, bladder retraining, breathing techniques, manual therapy, and education on healthy bladder and bowel habits. A personalised rehabilitation programme helps improve muscle strength and coordination, reduce urinary leakage and pelvic pain, enhance bladder control, and support a safe return to normal daily activities with greater comfort, confidence, and long-term wellbeing.
