Retrocalcaneal bursitis

Retrocalcaneal bursitis

Retrocalcaneal Bursitis is an inflammatory condition affecting the bursa located between the Achilles tendon and the heel bone (calcaneus). The bursa acts as a cushion to reduce friction during movement, but repetitive stress, overuse, tight calf muscles, poorly fitting footwear, or underlying conditions such as arthritis can cause it to become irritated and inflamed. Common symptoms include pain at the back of the heel, swelling, tenderness, stiffness, and discomfort during walking, running, climbing stairs, or wearing shoes that press against the heel.

Physiotherapy plays a key role in treating Retrocalcaneal Bursitis by reducing inflammation, relieving pain, and restoring normal foot and ankle function. Following a thorough assessment, your physiotherapist will develop a personalised rehabilitation programme that may include manual therapy, stretching of the calf and Achilles tendon, progressive strengthening exercises, gait retraining, and activity modification. Footwear advice, heel lifts, taping techniques, and balance exercises may also be recommended to reduce pressure on the affected area and prevent recurrence. Early physiotherapy intervention helps improve mobility, promote healing, and enable a safe return to everyday activities and sports.
