Trochanteric Bursitis / Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome (GTPS)

Trochanteric Bursitis, also known as Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome (GTPS), is a common condition that causes pain over the outer side of the hip due to irritation of the bursa and surrounding tendons, particularly the gluteal tendons. It may develop as a result of repetitive overuse, prolonged standing, walking, running, poor biomechanics, muscle weakness, direct trauma, or age-related tendon degeneration. Individuals typically experience pain and tenderness over the outer hip, which may worsen when lying on the affected side, climbing stairs, walking long distances, standing on one leg, or getting up from a chair. The pain may also radiate down the outer thigh and interfere with sleep, work, exercise, and everyday activities.

Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are important to reduce pain and prevent the condition from becoming chronic. Physiotherapy plays a vital role in managing GTPS by reducing pain and inflammation, improving hip mobility, strengthening the gluteal and core muscles, correcting movement patterns, and enhancing pelvic stability. Treatment may include manual therapy, stretching, progressive strengthening exercises, activity modification, and education on posture and load management. A personalised rehabilitation programme helps restore normal hip function, reduce the risk of recurrence, and enable patients to return safely to work, sports, and daily activities with greater comfort, strength, and confidence.
