What Happens During a Specialist Physiotherapy Clinical Assessment?

  1. History and Subjective Interview

    • The physiotherapist will ask about:
      • When your symptoms started
      • What makes them better or worse
      • How your symptoms affect your daily activities
      • Your goals for treatment

  2. Physical Examination

    • This is an objective evaluation and may include:
      • Observation: Checking your posture, movement patterns, and how you walk
      • Range of Motion: Assessing how flexible your joints are
      • Strength Testing: Evaluating the strength of specific muscle groups
      • Musculoskeletal & Neurological Tests: Checking reflexes and nerve function, special tests to understand about your knee meniscus / cartilage etc.
      • Palpation: Touching the area to check for tenderness, tissue texture, or swelling
      • Specialist Assessments: Using specific tools or scales (e.g., Pain Scale, PROM on your function, Sports specific testing as necessary)


  3. Red Flag Screening

    • The physiotherapist will ask questions to rule out serious conditions (like infections, fractures, or cauda equina syndrome) that require urgent referral to a doctor.

  4. Diagnosis and Treatment Planning
    • Based on the findings, you’ll receive:
      • An explanation of your diagnosis
      • A personalized treatment plan, which may include hands-on therapy, a home exercise program, or further referrals


What to Bring to Your Appointment


  • Comfortable clothing (half trouser & T shirt, footwear / sports shoes that you may use etc
  • Any relevant medical history or documentation
  • A list of current medications
  • Any questions you have about your condition or treatment plan
